FIC REC: Paintbox

Author: Lunik
Summary: Loki learns that when a man asks permission to paint you, sometimes he means he actually wants to paint you. More literally in some cases than others.
Word count: 4k
Characters/pairings: Loki/Steve
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: None

Rec notes: This is one of those pairings I didn’t expect to like when I first started seeing it crop up around the internet. Especially considering how this fic pre-dates Avengers 1.

But whoops, it’s one of my favourites, and one I go for when I’m looking for something quiet and thoughtful. This author especially manages to weave Loki and Steve’s personalities together to complement one another, without either seeming to undermine the other. The AU is simple, and allows those personalities to shine through without the inherent bravado and posturing that is necessary when the ship is presented in a canon-compliant setting. Steve is an artist, and Loki is his agent. This is all the fic asks you to accept in order to get these two dancing around one another while they both try to figure out what the hell Steve is actually trying to accomplish with this scheme of his.

It’s short and sweet, and more about how the characters fit together than the rating and length imply.

FIC REC: The Joke

Steve’s not usually oblivious – far from it, in fact. But he does have his moments.

Like when he didn’t realize that the team was actually serious when they talked about Mjolnir being a magical weapon that only Thor could lift.

(Inspired by a head-canon prompt, in light of the comics-canon fact that Steve is actually capable of wielding Mjolnir. Full text of prompt is in the beginning notes.)
Word count: 7k
Characters/pairings: Natasha Romanov, Steve Rogers, Clint Barton, Thor, Nick Fury, Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, Phil Coulson
Rating: General
Warnings: None

Rec notes: This is primarily a character piece, and I love those. Steve goes through most of the fic assuming that they’re all just supposed to pretend that nobody can lift Mjolnir. That doesn’t stop him from picking up the hammer and moving it from time to time. The characterisation is lovely and subtle, which just brings the humour out even more. Thor’s confused reaction to finding Mjolnir not where he left it is especially good, and the whole fic builds up to a very satisfyingending.

FIC REC: Despite Himself

Author: errantcomment
Summary: Loki runs a bookshop, because he likes books. Unfortunately, he only found out he didn’t like people once he’d had the grand opening. Now he spends a lot of time sulking, talking to his cat, not talking to his housemate, and sulking. Then one day, the shop bell rings and despite himself, it all changes.

Notting Hill/Avengers/Thor fusion. Mundane AU in which Steve is still a big dude but mostly he’s an architect, Natasha is a security consultant, and Thor is a Viking accountant.
Word count: 50k
Characters/pairings: Loki/Darcy, Steve Rogeres, Natasha Romanoff, Tony Stark, Clint Barton, Bruce Banner, Thor
Rating: Mature
Warnings: None

Rec notes: I have a thing for Richard Curtis and Hugh Grant, so a Notting Hill Tasertricks AU amused me greatly. Loki is a bit more Bernard Black (though, this fic does feature a cameo by Black, in reference to Moran’s role in the film) than Hugh Grant, with a complete misanthropic view of everything. His assistant Bruce has some amazing anger management issues, and only seems to keep his job because he’s useful in scaring away shoplifters. I really enjoy Tony in this as well, and Steve/Tasha as the secondary couple makes me want fic just about them in this universe.

Best of all, I think, is the side thread with Thor and Loki, and how the author kept the tension between Loki and the rest of his family without the whole genocide thing getting in the way. Instead, he just fucked off like a child and refuses to face his problems like an adult, which does feel like a rather Loki-ish way to handle problems.

It also has the kind of ending I love. Not a happily ever after, and not perfect. But satisfying. Everything feels tied up at the end, but it’s more of a slightly mangled knot than a neat little bow, which makes it feel a bit more real to me.
