FIC REC: Apotheosis

Author: SolainRhyo
Summary: Jane’s life started to end after the fall of Malekith. She’s learned the hard way that even loving a god can’t keep you safe from all evils. To salvage the remnants of both her life and her sanity, she’s gone into hiding. She knew her dealings with Asgard were far from over, but she never expected to have to contend with Loki again. Lokane. Post TDW.
Word count: 80k
Characters/pairings: Loki/Jane, Bruce Banner, Thor
Rating: Mature
Warnings: CNTW

Rec notes: In a lot of ways, this fic reminds me of Trickster God, which I didn’t expect going in.  If you wanted to read that one, but it was a bit too heavy and in your face about the themes, SolainRhyo’s fic might be more your speed.  It deals with a lot of the same themes, but much less directly, and plays up the romance angle without subversion.  Jane is broken, abandoned, and utterly reliant on Loki for safety.  When he falls to Earth, and she’s the only person who can help him, things very quickly go off the rails.  And it explores this while also asking the question that gets asked in the MCU once or twice: Where the fuck is Thor when anyone needs him?  And why does he think he can just show back up and everything will go back to normal?

Loki is deranged, unhinged, and utterly self-serving through this entire thing.  Jane is bitter and resentful and pissed off enough with everyone else’s bullshit that somehow Loki seems like the best option for her.  And when her options are Loki, or get thrown in jail forever, well.  For some reason it’s always Loki, isn’t it?  Even when he’s horrible and cruel, and just the worst person in the galaxy.  It’s still always Loki.

Summary: When Odin banishes both Thor and Loki to Midgard, the plan seems simple at first—find Mjölnir and get home. After alienating those who try to help them, it becomes clear that getting back to Asgard won’t be as simple as finding a fallen hammer in the desert. Stranded in a realm that has forgotten their gods, Thor and Loki must prove their worth to return; a tricky task when they’ve been left no clear instructions of what their father wants from them.

This year is no exception. Except for the part where her mother is absolutely convinced that she and Loki are dating.

Not only is this idea in her mind to stay, she is completely unaware that Verity’s new social group consists solely of a bunch of ancient Norse criminals, all living secret lives as hipsters with too much disposable income.

Somehow, Verity knows this is going to be nothing short of a week from hell.

Summary: The trip to Costa Rica was years in the planning, but now it’s finally happening. Two couples on a ten-day trip over Christmas, to the world’s most exotic resort and theme park.

What Darcy didn’t plan for was her boyfriend breaking up with her only weeks before the once-of-a-lifetime, non-refundable trip. It’s just a good thing she knows someone else who wasn’t even invited. Her new date for the trip may be going out of his way to be as obnoxious as possible, but he’s not even close to the worst thing about this vacation from hell.

Loki/Darcy fake dating, Odinson family drama, and dinosaur carnage.

Summary: What if one decision over 1000 years ago was made differently? Rather than being fed lies and made an unwilling party to them, the narrative changes and Loki is raised knowing he is Jötunn. But Asgard is no place for an abandoned Jötunn runt.

AU in which Odin is mostly-honest, Thor is still a spoilt brat, and Loki still deserves a smack in the mouth. Or, that time the MCU was inhabited by the comic versions of Thor and Loki.

FIC REC: Despite Himself

Author: errantcomment
Summary: Loki runs a bookshop, because he likes books. Unfortunately, he only found out he didn’t like people once he’d had the grand opening. Now he spends a lot of time sulking, talking to his cat, not talking to his housemate, and sulking. Then one day, the shop bell rings and despite himself, it all changes.

Notting Hill/Avengers/Thor fusion. Mundane AU in which Steve is still a big dude but mostly he’s an architect, Natasha is a security consultant, and Thor is a Viking accountant.
Word count: 50k
Characters/pairings: Loki/Darcy, Steve Rogeres, Natasha Romanoff, Tony Stark, Clint Barton, Bruce Banner, Thor
Rating: Mature
Warnings: None

Rec notes: I have a thing for Richard Curtis and Hugh Grant, so a Notting Hill Tasertricks AU amused me greatly. Loki is a bit more Bernard Black (though, this fic does feature a cameo by Black, in reference to Moran’s role in the film) than Hugh Grant, with a complete misanthropic view of everything. His assistant Bruce has some amazing anger management issues, and only seems to keep his job because he’s useful in scaring away shoplifters. I really enjoy Tony in this as well, and Steve/Tasha as the secondary couple makes me want fic just about them in this universe.

Best of all, I think, is the side thread with Thor and Loki, and how the author kept the tension between Loki and the rest of his family without the whole genocide thing getting in the way. Instead, he just fucked off like a child and refuses to face his problems like an adult, which does feel like a rather Loki-ish way to handle problems.

It also has the kind of ending I love. Not a happily ever after, and not perfect. But satisfying. Everything feels tied up at the end, but it’s more of a slightly mangled knot than a neat little bow, which makes it feel a bit more real to me.
