Summary: They’re just animals.
She understood the dog. He was big and intimidating, but he was also dumb and friendly and fluffy, and all the things a dog should be.
All the things an animal should be.
Somehow, the dumb and friendly and fluffy overrode the big and intimidating. The dog sometimes startled her, but he didn’t scare her.
But the basement was a different story. The basement, with an elaborate set up holding dozens of snakes in plastic tubs. Snakes he insisted were safe and docile. Snakes he insisted could be petted as easily as the dog. Snakes with forked tongues and eyes like drops of black ink, and sharp teeth he insisted weren’t fangs.
They were just animals. Animals he bred and raised and kept in plastic tubs in the basement. Animals that were afraid of their own food.
But she saw those sharp little teeth when one of the rowdy little snakes had tried to bite him, and she thought of bipedal crocodiles. She saw their ink black eyes and thought of flying dragons defending their territory. She saw their forked tongues and thought of monsters in the jungle.
They were just animals. But so were the monsters in the jungle.
